Miller IP Law’s The Inventive Journey welcomed Sandy Eulitt back to discuss entrepreneurship, unconventional working hours, and why building a company rarely fits within a traditional definition of work-life balance.

On September 1, 2025, Sandy Eulitt returned to Miller IP Law’s The Inventive Journey for Episode #682, “The Myth of Work-Life Balance.”

Hosted by patent and trademark attorney Devin Miller, The Inventive Journey features the real experiences of startup founders and small-business owners, including the decisions they made, the setbacks they encountered, and the lessons they learned while building their companies.

In this episode, Sandy discusses the personal and professional demands of entrepreneurship and challenges the assumption that founders should maintain a conventional separation between work and the rest of their lives.

For Sandy, building Galacxia, Inc. and Life Backup Plan is not a side project confined to traditional business hours. It is an undertaking that requires product development, fundraising, marketing, business development, legal work, intellectual property management, technology oversight, relationship building, and daily company operations.

That workload does not neatly end at 5 p.m.

As Sandy explains during the interview, many startup founders and small-business owners acknowledge that traditional work-life balance is unrealistic, particularly during the demanding early stages of building a company. She works weekends, frequently continues until 3 a.m., and attends conferences and networking events that serve both professional and social purposes.

The episode explores more than the number of hours required to build a company. It examines the need for founders to understand themselves, recognize what motivates them, and create working patterns suited to their own energy, responsibilities, and ambitions.

Sandy also reflects upon her experiences as an entrepreneur, including significant business decisions, lessons learned from decisions that did not work as expected, and the persistence required to continue developing an ambitious platform despite limited resources and unexpected obstacles.

Life Backup Plan was created to solve problems Sandy had encountered personally, particularly the vulnerability of recovering from surgery while living alone. The original concept of automated wellness checks expanded into a comprehensive health and safety platform encompassing personal health information, caregiving, wellness tracking, emergency preparedness, assistance, and critical-document information.

Her natural tendency to work late is also connected to her background in astronomy. Rather than forcing herself into a conventional daytime schedule, Sandy has learned to work during the hours when she is most alert, focused, and productive.

This does not mean that nothing is protected from work. Sandy establishes firm boundaries around a small number of personally important occasions, including her birthday and Christmas. Outside those boundaries, however, she accepts that entrepreneurship is woven throughout her life rather than confined to a predetermined schedule.

Transforming that vision into an operating company has demanded long hours, adaptability, sacrifice, and a willingness to perform many different roles. It has also required Sandy to determine which responsibilities demand her direct involvement and which should be delegated to people with complementary expertise.

Her experience illustrates that entrepreneurship is not governed by a universal formula. Some founders thrive within highly structured schedules. Others accomplish their best work late at night, on weekends, or in concentrated periods that do not resemble a traditional workday.

The more meaningful goal is not necessarily to divide work and life into equal portions. It is to build a sustainable working life around one’s priorities, natural rhythms, personal responsibilities, and sense of purpose.

For Sandy, that means accepting that Life Backup Plan is a central part of her life while preserving selected boundaries that genuinely matter. Rather than pursuing an artificial ideal of balance, she focuses on progress, purpose, and building a company capable of improving health, safety, care, and peace of mind for others.
