Sandy Eulitt on Building Life Backup Plan and Surviving the “Department of Crap”
Produce Your Passion host Sam Dever interviewed Sandy Eulitt about the personal experience that inspired Life Backup Plan, the realities of building an ambitious technology company, and the inevitable entrepreneurial “Department of Crap.”
On August 28, 2025, Sandy Eulitt joined host Sam Dever for Episode #19 of Produce Your Passion, titled “Life Back Up Plan: How One Founder Is Saving Lives.”
The conversation explores the personal experience that inspired Sandy to create Life Backup Plan, the evolution of the company, and the persistence required to transform an ambitious idea into a working health and safety technology platform.
Life Backup Plan began with a problem Sandy encountered firsthand. While recovering from rotator cuff surgery and living alone in a two-story home, she realized that she could fall, become ill, or experience another emergency and remain undiscovered for days.
That experience led to the original concept of automated wellness checks. Life Backup Plan would check on a user at scheduled times and notify trusted contacts if the person failed to respond.
The concept soon became much larger.
As Sandy considered the health, safety, caregiving, and emergency-preparedness challenges affecting her family, friends, and community, she recognized that people needed more than another single-purpose application. Essential information and services were fragmented across healthcare providers, applications, devices, institutions, documents, and family members.
Life Backup Plan evolved into a comprehensive platform connecting personal safety, health information, wellness tracking, caregiving, emergency preparedness, assistance, and critical-document information.
During the interview, Sandy discusses the experiences and professional background that prepared her to design the platform. Her career has included software engineering, database architecture, technical project management, computer sales, astronomy education, and entrepreneurship. That combination enabled her to approach Life Backup Plan not simply as an application, but as an interconnected system capable of addressing multiple aspects of everyday life.
The episode also examines the less glamorous reality of building a company: what Sandy calls the “Department of Crap.”
Every entrepreneur must handle an endless stream of administrative work, technical problems, financial pressures, legal matters, scheduling complications, unexpected expenses, and other responsibilities that have little to do with the inspiring vision behind the company. Someone must still solve them, and in an early-stage business, that person is frequently the founder.
Sandy’s description of the Department of Crap gives a humorous name to a serious entrepreneurial challenge. Founders must continually protect enough time and energy to advance the company while also dealing with the unplanned problems that can consume an entire day.
Her own experience building Galacxia, Inc. has required her to move among product development, fundraising, business development, marketing, intellectual property, legal work, technology oversight, networking, partnerships, and routine company operations. The work rarely conforms to a conventional schedule, and progress depends upon persistence, adaptability, and the ability to keep moving after unexpected setbacks.
The conversation also highlights the importance of passion grounded in purpose. Life Backup Plan grew from a genuine unmet need that Sandy experienced personally and subsequently recognized in the lives of many others.
Older adults living independently, people recovering from surgery, individuals with chronic conditions, caregivers, families, and people who are by themselves all face variations of the same underlying problem: essential help and information may not be available when and where they are needed.
Since the interview was recorded, Life Backup Plan has continued evolving beyond its original identity as a personal-safety application. Today, it is positioned as an Interoperable Lifecare Platform™ organized around the Five M’s of Health and Safety™: Monitoring, Medicine, Metrics, Money, and Membership.
The platform now incorporates automated wellness checks, personal health information, Digital Patient Intake, medication and medical-history information, symptom and lifestyle tracking, caregiving, community assistance, emergency preparedness, and critical-document information.
Life Backup Plan is also being developed for applications across healthcare organizations, employers, governments, utilities and infrastructure operators, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and large events and venues.
